Whether you are in L.A for a couple of days or a couple of weeks – make sure you visit the look out point at the Griffith Observatory, in my opinion, the best free thing to do in Los Angeles.
Sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, the observatory has the most amazing views of Downtown LA, the Pacific Ocean and the Hollywood sign.
Just a 15 minute drive from Hollywood Boulevard, it’s surprisingly accessible. If you don’t have a car, get a taxi or an Uber and spend a couple of hours there.
The observatory itself, which houses lots of science and space related displays, is free to enter, but even if you aren’t interested in going inside, visit just for the views outside.
There are lots of trails leading off from the car park that take you further into the Hollywood hills. We took a short 15 minute walk that ended up leading us even closer to the Hollywood sign where we spent some time admiring the panorama. We could have carried on walking for a couple of hours if we wanted, and there were plenty of locals enjoying a mid morning hike or run as they passed us on our stroll.
Below are some photos we took, but they don’t do the views justice!
